Sources
Official and other sources
What the Official, Source and Lead only labels on your sources mean, and why Sudwire writes from official bodies.
Each card on the Sources tab has a label:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Official | A source on a government or police web address, like .gov, .gov.uk or police.uk. Sudwire writes from it. |
| Source | Sudwire writes from it too, but its address isn't a government or police one: for example a council or university on its own domain, or a social account. |
| Lead only | Another news outlet. Its stories show up as story leads and are never rewritten. |
The Official filter on the Sources tab lists every source Sudwire writes from (Official and Source), and Lead only lists the outlets.
Why official sources
Official announcements are public information meant to be reported. Writing from them, and crediting them, keeps your articles close to the facts and keeps you clear of copying other newsrooms.
Sudwire writes from every source that isn't lead only. So when you add another news outlet by hand, tick This is another news outlet (lead only), and on plans without story leads, only add official bodies.
Photos from the source itself only come from official sources (see Photos).
