Site shows Not running

What the Not running label and the banners at the top of your dashboard mean, and how to fix each one.

A site that's switched on but can't write shows Not running, with the reason on its Today page:

Reason	What to do
Drafts start once your site is confirmed.	See Site not confirmed.
Turn on a source to start drafts.	Add a source, or turn one on, on the Sources tab.
This site isn’t running right now.	Your plan covers fewer sites than you have. The sites you added first keep running: remove one, or move to a plan with more sites (see Change your plan).

Other states

Setting up: something is still missing. The Today page lists it under Get your site running.
Paused: someone paused the site. Press Turn on.
On: the site is running.

Nothing runs while the account needs something. The banner at the top says what:

Banner	What to do
Drafts start with your 14-day free trial.	Start the trial on Billing (see The free trial).
Choose a plan to begin.	Choose a plan on Billing.
Your free trial opens soon. We’ll email you.	Payments aren't open yet. Carry on setting up.
Your last payment didn’t go through.	Update your card (see Failed payments).
Your subscription is paused.	The plan is paused (see Cancel or pause).
Your subscription has ended.	Choose a plan on Billing to start again.
This account is suspended. Contact support.	Contact support.
Drafts start once the account owner sets up the plan.	Team members see this: ask the account owner.
